The Transformation of Project Management Training

Following 20 years at a large Canadian telecommunications firm, Bruce established the project management consulting firm Solutions Management Inc (SMI). Since 1999, he has provided contract project/program management services, been a source for project management support personnel and created/delivered courses to over 7,000 participants in Canada, the United States and England.

Many (many) years ago, I recall sitting in a high school English class and learning about Greek mythology and pre-Socractic philosophers. I couldn’t understand why I had to take the class, so I put in the least possible amount of effort. Perhaps there was something to it after all. It turns out one of the philosophers, Heraclitus, knew exactly what he was talking about. In a quote dating back to 500 BCE, Heraclitus stated: “Change is the only constant in life.”

That quote continues to resonate throughout all businesses and includes elements such as where and how we work, how we connect with clients and colleagues around the world, and the definition of what a professional “career” means. This article will explore an element that I am very personally very involved with: project management training.

Even the old is new
I have been involved with corporate training for more than 10 years and have connected with close to 10,000 participants. The early years were exclusively in-class and often involved groups of 25 to 30 people in the downtown core of the largest city in Canada. While I still deliver face-to-face project management courses, the group size and my approach has changed dramatically. Rarely are there more than 20 people in the class room.
