Shipping incremental technology improvements has value, but I would not describe it as exciting. If you are looking for a new opportunity, take a closer look at the digital project manager field—a relatively new career sub-category that has emerged. In my research, it has come up most often in digital agencies and technology companies. Here is the definition from TheDigitalProjectManager.com:

“It is a complex role which requires a unique skill set. The job requires an understanding from a strategic perspective of why you should do a project, what technology could be used to achieve it, what it could look like, how it could work, and importantly, how much it will cost and when it could be delivered. We tend to be digital specialists, but a jack of all trades when it comes to understanding digital strategy, customer experience, user experience, business analysis, design, copy writing, SEO, development, QA, and analytics.”

What do these digital project manager jobs look like? The day-to-day work varies depending on the industry. The common thread is a focus on digital tools and products such as marketing campaigns and software campaigns. Here are excerpts from two job postings I found:
